*A Bodhisattva ("one whose essence is Bodhi") is in Buddhism a person who has dedicated himself to helping all beings realize their buddha nature, ie. obtain full enlightment. The word is often used for a category of beings who themselves have attained full awareness and thus can go into one of nirvana, but still chooses to incarnate on earth to help others to enlighten-ment. The term is also used on the historical Buddha, Gautama Buddha, before he achieved this insight.
